Cultural Journal

The Cultural Journal is an original programme by Narodni dom Maribor, introducing children from Maribor to culture for the first time. A diverse and high-quality selection of events offers opportunities to explore a broad spectrum of artistic processes and visit the backstage of various cultural institutions in the city.

What lies hidden behind the theatre curtains? How is an exhibition curated? Who makes puppets? How does an archive care for centuries-old documents? What does a sound engineer do? And a stage manager? A curator? A producer?

The essence of the Cultural Journal is cultural education, an important component and one of its primary goals being the cultivation of critical and sensitive viewers, listeners, and perhaps future creators of cultural events. Through the Cultural Journal, schools and pupils have the opportunity to participate in the creation of a comprehensive cultural offer at the city level. The organisers of this project also provide professional assistance to schools in integrating the project into their curriculum. This programme gives cultural institutions in the city the chance to present their work and mission to a wide audience of pupils - their future visitors or even active participants in the cultural field. About sixty thousand preschool children, primary school pupils and high school students visit the subscription events of the Cultural Journal every year, so we can unequivocally state that we have raised an entire generation of new visitors and creators over the past thirty years! One of the biggest advantages of the Cultural Journal is that it has managed to connect more than 20 cultural institutions and 18 elementary schools into a cohesive programme, creating by far the largest and most successful platform for discovering the diverse cultural and artistic creativity of the city. But young visitors do not just get to know the programmes of the cultural institutions in the city. By taking a peek into their backstage, they also learn firsthand how they are structured and the way they operate. Thus, they are introduced to a wide range of professions, roles and processes that are necessary to create a theatrical or puppet show, to curate an exhibition, or to preserve museum, library or archival materials. All of this enables them to get to know the entire structure of the cultural, artistic and creative sector up close, helping us educate informed citizens who appreciate the work, knowledge, and effort required to enjoy cultural and artistic products.

Participation in the Cultural Journal is free for organised school groups.
