Promenade concerts

Maribor City Park was established in order to provide the residents of the rapidly growing city with a corner for relaxation and socialising. At the time when music did not yet resonate from the speakers of cafés and restaurants, promenade concerts were an indispensable part of the city's cultural offer. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, they were extremely popular and well-attended as they represented the heart of social life. In order to host such concerts, music pavilions were built in parks across Europe where orchestras and conductors performed waltzes and polkas. Maribor was no exception and got its pavilion in 1890. Let us just mention Johann Strauss Jr. and you will immediately understand the level of artistry we have in mind. Today, the tradition of organising promenade concerts in the park is maintained by Narodni dom Maribor. However, it is not just a place for socialising, but also one with a community purpose, as it offers local amateur ensembles and musical groups the opportunity to perform and present themselves. For more than three decades, wind bands, choirs, chamber ensembles, vocal groups, folk singers and bands as well as folklore groups have been responsible for a diverse and varied musical programme.

We continue the tradition of promenade concerts, which have been held since 1890, when the music pavilion was built in the park and became one of the most pleasant and popular meeting points in the city.

From May to September, promenade concerts, attended by old and new faces, bring together generations. They make children laugh and play, and they draw many residents to this green urban oasis as well as random visitors, making their visit to one of the most beautiful parks in this part of Europe even more pleasant.

Admission is free.
